Snowflake 2022 - Challenge 4

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner featuring feet in snuggly socks, a mug of hot chocolate, a notebook with 'dreams' written on the cover, and a guitar. Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31.

In your own space, make a list of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, and/or that you'd like someone to create or do for you.

Because it always feels slightly strange to ask for a ficlet, some icons, or artwork for my tiny bits of writing, I have decided to take a different route this year.

Here are my wishes, short and sweet.

I would like to know what TV shows and/or movies you love most at Netflix, Disney, or Amazon Prime; old or new stuff, all genre (as long as it is not hardcore horror, sorry ;) ). Everything is welcome. Maybe there is something I have missed so far?

Anyone around who loves audiobooks? Any recommendation (available on Audible preferred)? I am open to every genre; audiobook, audio drama or podcast because, why not try something new?

:::

Things I wish would exist in Fandom? Well, it would be great if someone owns a time machine and turns back time about 15 years. Fandom back then was different and more familiar to me. But probably people who are new in fandom would say the same if they would be thrown back into the old times.

The fact is, that fandom has changed over the years, it's much more short-lived because of the variety of new fandoms the media offers nowadays. I can't even say, that this is a bad thing; I do enjoy the wide spectrum we have now. But sometimes it can get a tiny bit overwhelming, and then I think back to the old times and allow me to miss them. At least for a while. Nothing wrong with that, isn't it?

I would like to know what TV shows and/or movies you love most at Netflix, Disney, or Amazon Prime;
Some things I enjoy! Idk your tastes, so just look at the summaries on the streaming platforms and see if they're relevant to your interests~

I tend to like easy-going series, something I can put on in the background and relax with. I wouldn't say I'm particularly fannish about any of these things, but I do enjoy them.

Disney: Encanto (!!!!!!! a cute movie!! I lowkey ship Bruno/Mirabel because I'm trash), Loki...
Netflix: Arrested Development (s1-3 only, imo), Seinfeld, The Good Place, Locke and Key (the first season was decent, haven't seen s2 yet, and idr if it's hardcore horror...), Mindhunter (I don't *think* it's very graphic/horror-oriented, iirc it's tamer than Criminal Minds wrt gore. It's more psychological horror, but YMMV).

it would be great if someone owns a time machine and turns back time about 15 years.
Now that's a mood.

I definitely miss the old days of fandom, especially the Lost fandom where I was most active at that time.

I miss the old fandom too. But I also note that 90-95% of the people who participate in Snowflake promptly vanish as soon as it's over -- as opposed to sticking around to participate in communities and each other's blogs. Lots of people want fannish community, but few are willing to create it. We're left with the brief stuff because that is what people are doing.

>> Hmmm, I have never seen it that way, but yes, you are right. <<

If you mean people vanishing after Snowflake, I'm spotting it because when I check people's blogs from the intro post, I scroll back to see if they're active before subscribing. I keep finding blogs that only have Snowflake and maybe 1-2 other posts in between the rounds, but are not marked Friends Only.

>> Problem is, that people who are asking for more fannish activity are thinking often on their own little fandom world. <<

Sometimes true, but when they're listing major fandoms as not having enough activity, or being shitfests? That's concerning. And the tiny-fandom folks should have multifandom communities to gather in. It's why I made [community profile] allbingo, because there wasn't anything general at the time, they were all fandom-specific and had some common problems frustrating people. It's still active, and one reason for that is because when someone says "Nobody shares my rare fandom," I invite them to come do a fest on it. They might find someone else interested, and even if not, we'll get cool new prompts to play with. Meeting new fandoms is fun, and we need places for that.

>> But the fandom scene is so much more variegated today and it gets more and more difficult to meet people who share your interests over a longer time. Sooner or later lots of people will finally give up sharing their fandom love with others but start making their own thing. And yes, I guess, this applies to me, too.<<

Yeah. That's a problem. Too much content scatters the market in a way that makes the culture work less well. Music has the same problem. :/

Me, I write original material via crowdfunding because the mainstream is not interested in publishing some of what I want to read and write. Interestingly, I have friends writing fanfic or shared-canon in my settings -- not one setting, a bunch of them; not one person, but multiple; and not just short stuff, but whole books' worth. Sometimes, this can go to pretty awesome places.

I don't think it's a bad thing if fanfic inspires people to write their own stuff. That's how we get new canons. There have been a handful of things that really lived through fandom, some interacting with authors, some separate. And I honestly think Kirk/Spock slashfic contributed a great deal to the acceptability of gay relationships, turning from appalling to cute. That matters.

Might you be interested in Cobra Kai? I wasn't at first, mostly amused at the notion of it. But someone made a vid and I watched it and then I had to see the show. Feels galore! This is my post that contains that vid if you're interested in checking it out. There are spoilers, natch.

Oh, yay! I haven't seen s4 yet, either, and I really want to!!!

The 80s soundtrack made me feel all nostalgic. *g*

I live in Australia so my streaming may be a little different, but maybe one of these may strike your fancy! These are all tv shows because the movies I tend to watch are just the Marvel ones lol.

Apologies if you're familiar with some of these already.

Netflix
• SEX EDUCATION — Set in England, modern-day, it focuses on a high school boy giving positive and good sex advice to his student cohort. His mother is a sex therapist, so a lot of the advice he gives is very positive and helpful. The show is sex-positive, features an assortment of different (and amazing) characters, and has fantastic writing imo. No kink is belittled and no character is shamed by the narrative.

• SCHITT'S CREEK — If you've seen Arrested Development, it's similar to that, but it's better imo because I don't think it will age poorly. It's about a rich family that loses everything. It's funny and has fantastic characters. They're all a bit dopey and stereotypes, but they do subvert them and the performances are great. The first season is rough, but I'd recommend sticking with it.

• DAYBREAK — If you like zombie stories, I think you'd like this. It's a lot of fun and is set in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, and follows this high schooler who's trying to find his girlfriend. It's not overly disgusting. It won't get a second season, but I did thoroughly enjoy it.

• A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS — I read the books so I have a love for this show, but I think it's a lot of fun and something you can follow if you're not familiar with the story. Three orphans who aren't of age go into the care of Count Olaf, who wants nothing more than their money. They have to outwit him and deal with adults who refuse to believe their story. The storytelling is fantastic, the sets are amazing, and I think that despite the somewhat repeated main plot per episode, it's a fun series to watch if you like a bit of mystery.

• THE WITCHER — The first season still confuses the hell out of me, but season two is infinitely better. It's a fun fantasy show that has amazing characters and women being badass. It does have some blood and guts due to its violence. I think the performances are great and the costumes are to die for.

• SHADOW AND BONE — This is another fantasy show, although it seems more set in just powers and politics. It follows people who are being persecuted for having powers and also a band of misfits who want to make some money. The characters are what I find the most enjoyable. The performances, costumes, and sets are really pretty, too.

• THE GOOD PLACE — What happens after you die? Other than being greeted by Ted Danson, you go to the Good Place. It's a fun comedy with great characters who change over the course of the show.

• THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR — It's a little scary in terms of ghosts, but it has such a beautiful love story and a haunting, sad tale of grief. It's not hardcore horror imo, but it is a touch spooky.

Disney+
• BOB'S BURGERS — I love this cartoon so much. It's a great show about a family who is trying to make ends meet. The kids don't make life easier, and the show focuses on each family member from time to time. It's a little like the Simpsons, The first season is rough, but it gets better after the finale.

• WANDAVISION — I love this show so much. It has great production sets, fantastic storytelling, a fun mystery, and a great exploration of grief. I don't think you need to watch MCU to be able to enjoy it since it does cover the main points of Wanda's life in the series.

I'll stop, but I can only hope you can enjoy one of these!

Yes, yes, yes to all of this! Thank you for saying this. I love the Dreamwidth platform, but things just aren't very lively around here. I've been thinking about starting a DW community for my rarepair but I'm afraid it'll just be me. And it seems like even fics have changed -- back then, it wasn't unusual to get long fics with lots of plot and maybe a little smut, whereas now smut takes center stage and fics are often very short with no plot, constricted like our attention spans. It's just not as interesting. Anyway, I complained/waxed nostalgic on this topic on my blog a little bit ago.

It's true! I'm grateful I've found a really great community on DW of my larger fandom.
