Note: This story is part of my 'Homeland' universe, where Casey and Zeke are married and have adopted two children. All stories can be read as stand-alone ones.

Zeke returned to the living room and dropped down on the couch beside Casey. „He's finally fallen asleep,“ he said, smiling.

Casey sighed silently. „Guess the prospect of his first con is a bit overwhelming. I wonder if we are doing the right thing; maybe he is still too young.“

„Stan and Stokey will pay good attention to him, and bring him back in one piece, don't worry.“

„I'm not worried about that; I know we can trust them. It's just...“

Zeke gave him a sideways glance. „His costume," he asked.

"Really, I don't know what Stokes was thinking when she told him that anime dresses are so cool.“

"Well, animes are the new comics. Lots of people are crazy about it."

"Doesn't mean that our son has to wear a colorful dress." Casey huffed. "Why can't he go as Superman or Chewbacca, as every boy his age will."

Zeke pulled his face. „Don't you think this is a tiny bit narrow-minded? You are a big supporter of 'Free Life for Everyone', but it is a problem when your eight-year-old son dresses up like a girl for some hours?“

Casey blinked some tears away. „You know, I don't mind, but others might. What if they laugh about him or call him a freak? I don't want him to get hurt.“

„Case!“ Zeke put his arm around his husband's shoulder. „I know, it wasn't easy for you as a child, growing up in the closeminded town of fucking Ohio, and with no around backing you up.

But this is a convention in New York, where everyone goes wild. And Jay is growing up with two fathers who love him to pieces. We can't protect him from all dumbheads in the world, but we made him strong enough always to be proud of himself and to go his way, no matter what others think about it.“

He paused and chuckled. „He looks cute in his dress, don't you think so?"

„I'm afraid he does." A slight smile sneaked on Casey's face. "Without this ridiculous monster cap on his head, he might even win a prize in the costume contest. And who knows what he will come up with then next time.“

„Surprise.“ Zeke laughed. „I guess this will depend entirely on our son's imagination. And of Stokes' newest obsession, of course.“ He bent forward for a kiss. "Don't worry, he will have a great time, and we will have a Saturday just for the two of us. Maybe we should take advantage of this and do some crazy things."

9. Postapocalyptic = 2 Prompts -> 2 Ficlets
Ficlet 1
Title: Giving up is not an option
Character: Kurdy Malloy, Mr. Smith
Word Count: 171
Prompt: postapocalyptic (death)
Rating: PG13

Restless Kurdy was lying on his bed; all in vain, he tried to get the pictures out of his head, the pictures of a burning town, crowded with people who had hoped for some rest and peace. Most of them died in the inferno before even realizing what happened to them — killed by some ruthless slyer who had long left every humanity behind.

As hard as Kurdy wanted to believe in Markus' dream of a better future for everyone, all hope seemed to be lost on days like these. Why fight when the evil always seemed to win? All too overpowering and strong. The good in this world was long dead.

A low voice tore him out of his reverie. „Come with me!“

„Smith!“ Kurdy groaned. „I'm not in the mood for your shit.“

Annoyed, he noticed the almost invisible smile on the little guy's face. „I promise God will keep quiet tonight. But I can give you the reason why you should stay up tomorrow and move on.“

Ficlet 2
Title: Humanity and Peace
Character: Kurdy Malloy, Mr. Smith. Sister Hannah
Word Count: 450
Prompt: postapocalyptic (humanity)
Rating: PG13

This story is a sequel to Giving up is not an option

„Smith, where the heck are we going in the middle of the night,“ Kurdy suddenly snapped.

„Almost there. Just two miles.“

Quickly the little guy followed the small road despite the pitch darkness, and Kurdy closed his eyes again. He was not in the mood for a fight; actually, that was the only reason he was here. He had already learned that every argument with Smith was in vain; he wouldn't stop bothering him until he got what he wanted. So Kurdy had grabbed for his jacket and, inwardly cursing, followed him to the garage.

When the jeep suddenly stopped, he reluctantly opened his eyes again. An old building was lying ahead of him, enclosed by a stone wall, a big wrought-iron gate in the middle. Kurdy frowned when he discovered a small belltower in the faint shine of the moon.

„Fuck you, Smith,“ he growled. „A church? A fucking church? After all, what happened today? You can't be serious.“

The little guy shut the motor off. „It's not a church; it's an old monastery. A place full of humanity and peace. All you fight for you will find here.“

Kurdy grabbed for his collar; this was too much. „If you don't want me to hit the shit out of you, you better bring us back to the Mountain instantly. This is...“ He stopped, shocked, his eyes widened. „Holy shit!“

Smith followed his look and smiled, when he noticed the woman standing at the gate. „This is Sister Hannah,“ he said. „A nun; she's living here.“

„She is...“ Kurdy's voice was rough. „She is old.“

„She is,“ Smith agreed.

„How is this possible? Fifteen years ago, all adults died.“

„But I am still here.“ The voice of the woman was calm but stronger than expected. She stepped closer, putting her arm on Kurdy's. He didn't dare to pull it away. „It took a while until I did find out the reason for it. Long I cursed God for not letting me go like all the others; I was alone, I was afraid, I couldn't understand. Until, one night, as cold and dark as this one, two children found their way to the monastery.“

„Children,“ Kurdy repeated, still feeling uneasy.

„Children; much too young to survive on their own. So I took them in. The next night there were three more of them. At the week's end, two dozen children were living here. This was the moment I realized it.

The children are the future of the world, and when we stop fighting, they are all lost.“ Smiling, she pointed at the big gate. "You should come in, and you will understand."
