TV Shows
01. - Grace & Frankie (TV Show, available on Netflix) - Season 1
Grace Hanson, a retired cosmetics mogul, and Frankie Bergstein, a quirky art teacher, out of the blue have to face the fact that their lives will never be like before again when their long-term husbands, Robert and Sol, announce they are in love with each other for 20 years already and finally want to start a life together.
What can I say? I did fall in love with this series from the beginning. At first, it looks like light comedy, but there is so much more. Often enough, you will find yourself in the stories, which tell about aging, and what this means for your life; divorce, a new beginning, a new love, health problems, dealing with homosexuality, problems of your children, even if they are already grown up.
I just hope the other six seasons can keep up the high level of season 1.
02. - Chicago Justice (TV Show, available on Amazon) Season 1
This series is the fourth in Dick Wolf's Chicago franchise (Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago P.D.). It follows the State's Attorney team of Peter Stone, which works to bring justice to victims.
I love all the Chicago series, so it was only a matter of time before I also had to watch this one. Though it was not as high-flying as the other three and got only one short season (10 episodes) I did enjoy it very much, mainly because you will meet the one or the other well-known character from the other series. So it is almost like coming home again.
03. - Pieces of her (Mini TV Show, available on Netflix) Season 1, based on a novel by Karen Slaughter
The series tells the story of Andy, who is caught in a deadly shooting at a diner. Feeling shocked, she had to watch her mother, Laura, eliminate the offender with ease. When some hours later, some guys from her mother's past reappear, and Laura asks her to leave the town instantly, Andy realizes that obviously, her mother has more than just one secret.
I did enjoy this series; it's suspenseful and knows to surprise the viewer more than once.
04. - Criminal minds: Suspect Behavior (TV Show, available on Disney plus) Season 1
The series follows the work of a profiler team of the BAU (well-known for the TV series Criminal minds).
Another spin-off of a TV series, which was sadly not as high-flying as the original and got canceled much too early (be warned, the last episode ends with a cliffhanger). But if you d0 enjoy the original series, I would suggest giving it a try. The main characters are great, and every episode tells a compelling story.
Movies
01. - The Martian (available on Disney)
The film tells the story of astronaut Mark Watney who is part of a Mars mission. When the mission ends abruptly because of solar eruptions, followed by a severe storm, he is left behind, everyone thinking that he died. But he actually isn't, and instead of giving up, he starts looking for ways to survive alone on Mars.
I can't believe that I took so long to watch this movie. It's a brilliant one, great actors, a great storyline. Sometimes it did remind me of 'Apollo 13', though, of course, The Martian is an entirely fictional story.
02. - The Adam's Project (available on Netflix)
2050. When fighter pilot Adam Reed steals a time jet, he accidentally lands in 2022 instead, where he meets his 12-year-old self, a lonely, angry boy who had just lost his mother. Only reluctantly, Reed asks him for help to repair his jet. But when they become closer, he finally tells him about the true reason for his mission: he is looking for his wife, Laura, who didn't come back from a mission in 2018.
Hmmm. This isn't a bad movie, but it isn't excellent, either. A bit cheesy and very foreseeable. Watching it to kill some time is okay, but if you have the choice, you might want to look for better science fiction movies.
03. - Jungle Cruise (available on Disney)
1916. Feisty English feminist and doctor of botany, Dr. Lily Houghton, plans another adventurous mission. She chartered a riverboat and asked the arrogant, wisecracking skipper, Captain Frank Wolff, to bring her up the Amazon River to find a secret tree whose petals are supposed to heal every illness.
I watched this movie because I needed some distraction after a stressful day, and I enjoyed it. It might not be very ambitious, but you should risk a look if you like movies like Indiana Jones or Pirates of the Caribian.
04. - Death on the Nile (2022) (available on Disney)
The movie is a new screen adoption of an Agatha Christie novel. Detective Hercule Poirot is on a cruise in Egypt when he gets involved in a murder case.
I was curious about the remake. Yes, it is more colorful than the old version, has great actors and a breathtaking scenery (especially when you love the antic Egypt). The story is the same, with some backstory additions. But does this make it an enjoyable movie? I have to admit that I felt a tiny bit disappointed; for me, the movie is too modern for the old-fashioned story.
Audiobooks
01. - Freed (by E.L.James)
The third book of the Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy told by Christian. Christian and Ana are finally married and start their new life together, but they still have to struggle with Christan's past and with their different life styles.
Yes, I admit, I enjoyed both book series - the first one told by Ana and the second one told by Christian. Some people might think it will get boring because the Christan books are only a retelling of the original series, but I can't agree. It was interesting to find out more about Christan's thoughts.
But I want to add a short warning: don't read these books as SM stories - this can only disappoint you!
02. - Heroes Are My Weakness (by Susan Elizabeth Phillips)
The dead of winter. An isolated island off the coast of Maine. A man. A woman. A mysterious mansion at sea. He's a reclusive writer with a love for chilling horror novels. She's an unsuccessful actor, broke, and forced to come back to her childhood house; she never wanted to enter again.
Yes, it is a love story with a touch of mystery; yes, it's not very demanding. But it was fun to listen to it during a short trip by train. I'm already looking for more books written by S.E.Phillips.
