at Prisca's Home.

Surprise! I am Prisca, living in Germany. So, English is not my native language; I try my best, but please forgive me when it is not always perfect.

Last year, I was not very active here, but I hope to do better in 2025. Goals are set; all I have to do now is start creating.

I rarely post about my RL life, but I like sharing my fandom thoughts/works with others. Just don't expect too much; I am here to have fun, but I will never turn into a famous writer/artist ;)

My favorite fandoms are Tolkien, The Faculty, and the TV series Jeremiah (which will probably only a handful of you remember). I try to be open to new fandoms, but often, these are only 'short-time-liaisons' I enjoy for a while before I move on to other shores.

I do write (mostly short fanfiction), and I create icons and sometimes small graphics. If you are interested in my stuff, look at my archives. New works will only be added there (though works for challenges might also be posted in the challenge community). I am still re-posting older works at my archive.

You can find my stories/poems in my Writing Area
at Dreamwidth and
at AO3.

You can find my icons in my Icon Area
at Dreamwidth.

My Challenge Communities

And now a tiny bit of promotion.

I am the administrator of three multifandom challenge communities and one comment fic community. If you are looking for some fun throughout the year, you might want to risk a look.

1. [community profile] fffc
Froday Flash Fiction Challenge (because years ago, we started as a Frodo-loving fan community) offers a challenge every Friday. No pressure; it's always up to you if you want to participate. No sign-up is necessary.

FFFC is open to all kinds of fanwork and all fandoms. We also love original works and real-person works.

2. [community profile] sweetandshort
Sweet&Short is a low-pressure community that offers four challenges throughout the month. No sign-up is necessary; just come by and have fun.

The community is open to all fandoms, original works, and real-life works. Allowed are fics up to 500 words, small poems like haiku or tanka (3-5 lines), icons (100x100 px), and small graphics up to 500px width x height.

3. [community profile] fandom_empire
Fandom Empire is a challenge community that offers three big challenges throughout the year. While the community is open to all fandoms, original works, and real-person works, every challenge will come with special rules.

You can earn points; at the end, there are badges/banners and even DW points for the most successful participants.

4. [community profile] fic_promptly
Fic Promptly is a comment fic community. You can leave and fill prompts, and, of course, you are welcome to check out all the great fics/poems written by other participants. The community is low-pressure; you don't even have to join to participate.

I have taken over this community in January 2025, and I want to try to keep it running again. And I could need your help = your prompts and fills. :)

Movie: Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025)
Main Actors: Renée Zellweger, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Leo Woodall

The Story
Ten years, Bridget was happy together with Marc Darcy, when he suddenly dies, leaving her behind with two little children.

Four years are gone. Her life is chaotic as ever, she tries her best to deal with it for her children. Her friends are slightly worried, convince her to go back to work ... and to look for some sex.

No sooner said than done. She gets her old job back, and two men step into her life: the science teacher of her son and a good-looking, maybe too young man. The first one turns out to be a pain in her neck, the second one, after a night planned as a one-night-stand, her lover for the summer.

For a while, Bridget is happy with her life, until she realizes that all this can't be all.

My Opinion
I didn't expect much more than a funny comedy when watching the movie last Tuesday. And yes, I didn't get disappointed; Bridget (Renée Zellweger) has gotten older but is still the chaotic woman I remember from the older movies. I enjoyed Hugh Grand and Colin Firth's minor appearances in their well-known roles. Also the new characters fit perfectly into the movie. I could smile and laugh, but I soon noticed something was different.

The movie manages the balancing act between comedy and reality much better than expected. I could feel with Bridget, the widow and single mum, in her early fifties, still mourning her husband and looking for a meaning and some luck for the rest of her life. This doesn't turn the movie around, but gives it a bit more depth than expected.

My Resume
I enjoyed this movie a lot. I got what I was looking for, a feel-good movie. It's the mixture of comedy and the touch of reality that surprised me pleasantly and made the movie even better than expected.

Promote a community!

This is my third post for the 'Community Thursday'. Today, I want to promote a new community that I discovered some days ago.

[community profile] thankfulthursday

It's not a community for fandom or challenges. It's a place to remember that there is so much in our life we can be thankful for. Nothing is too small to be grateful for.

Maybe you did wake up this morning and the sun was shining again after some grey and rainy days? Does this make you smile? Well, that's a reason to be thankful, don't you think so?

Or maybe you are talking with a friend again, after the big fight you have had some weeks ago? Your boss told you that you are doing a great job?

[community profile] thankfulthursday offers a post every Thursday to share these little (or big) happy moments with others. Come by and join the community; it's still so new and needs more participants to make it active and to boost its popularity.

Another adventure-filled year awaits you. Welcome it by celebrating your birthday with pomp and splendor. Wishing you a very happy and fun-filled day!

Promote a community!

This is my second post for the 'Community Thursday'. Today, I want to promote an icon community that already exists for some years. Sadly there is only little participation.

[community profile] dailyicons

As the name says, every day comes with a new prompt. You have two days to make your post.

If you want to participate, you can sign up with a general theme and the amount of icons you want to create. You can choose between
• 10 icons in 1 month
• 25 icons in 3 months
• 50 icons in 6 months
• 100 icons in 1 year

Sounds a bit too daring for you? There is no need to worry; the comm is very low pressure. You don't have to fill every prompt. You can ask for an extension if you cannot finish your table in time. You can drop a table at any time.

If you are an icon lover, I would suggest checking it out. The community certainly needs some more participants to stay alive.
prisca: (general - movies and tv)

TV Show: Fire Country (3 seasons up to now = 42 episodes)
Main Actors: Max Thieriot, Kevin Alejandro and others

The Story
As the title already tells us, the show is about firefighters. It takes place in a small town in Northern California, where a fire camp for prisoners is built, offering a chance to remission their sentence by helping the fire department.

Bode Donovan is one of them; sent to a fire camp near his hometown, he not only wants to leave his past behind to make a new start, but he also tries to approach his family and former friends again.

My Opinion
Let's get straight to the point: it's a TV show, not a documentary about prisoner's fire camps. If you are looking for realism, don't watch it.

Like every TV show, Fire Country wants to entertain its audience in every possible way. There is drama, there is love, there is fighting and reconciliation. There are wildfires, earthquakes, and floods. There is heroism and treason.

As expected, the show is a mixture of fire department drama and personal drama, and yes, sometimes it can get a bit too much. No, it's not a show that will earn lots of awards because of its clever plot and brilliant actors. But it knows to entertain me, so I will continue watching the show and have fun.

My Resume
If you like watching medical, crime, or other drama TV shows that are only created for fun and don't claim to be authentic, give it a try.

The third season has just aired; a new one has not been confirmed so far, but we can hope it will happen soon because a spin-off series with the title 'Sheriff Country' already is.

(Fannish 50 - post 5)
prisca: (general - movies and tv)

Movie: Conclave (2024)
Main Actors: Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci
Director: Edward Berger
Based on the book Conclave by Robert Harris

Story
The Pope is dead; the cardinals from all over the world come together in the Vatican to select the new one. But not everything is as it is supposed to be. Ambitions, intrigues, and lies come to light, making the difficult task of Cardinal Lawrence, the head of the election, more and more a question of conscience.

My Opinion
Some might think this movie is a boring one about the outdated institution of the church. Others might agree with many websites that call the movie a thriller. I can't agree with any of this.

The movie is not a thriller, nor is it boring. It takes place in the Vatican and tells about the process of the Pope's election. I admit here that I don't know enough about it to say how accurately this is shown - some resources I checked after watching the movie say that it is close but not strictly authentic.

It doesn't make a difference to me because I am aware that Conclave is a movie, not a documentary. The movie lives from the different characters coming together in the Vatican. There are some gripping twists and some interesting minor characters (have an eye on Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes). Real problems, the church has to deal with today, are mentioned but not discussed widely.

There is one scene (the explosion) that I would call superfluous because here the movie tries to create a kind of tension that is actually not necessary. And there is the surprising end of the movie. No, I don't want to spoil here, but I will admit, I can understand that opinions differ about it.

My Resume
Maybe it is not necessary to watch Conclave in the cinema because there are no fantastic effects that work so much better on a big screen. But if you feel ready for an interesting movie away from action, comedy, superheroes, and spaceships, I suggest giving it a try one day.

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner with image of skier kicking up snow on a snow white background. Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31.

In your space, create your own fandom challenge.

There are so many great (challenge) communities out there, many of which can need a bit more attention. There are some big communities almost everyone has already heard about, but the admins of smaller / new ones also put a lot of work and love into them.

Every community can only stay alive when at least some people risk a look now and then to post, read the fills, and comment. So, why not make it a challenge to check out a new community (if you don't know where to look for them, [community profile] fandomcalendar or [community profile] fandom_on_dw might be a good start). It can be that you will find your new passion for the year 2025.

Or revisit an old community you have left behind one day. Maybe it will still be active and welcome you back with open arms.

Only two wishes this time:

1. To complete my audiobook bingo card (link)I can need some ideas for (audio)books fitting the prompts.

I already know what to hear for Dystopian and Humor.
I am not into 'hardcore horror' but something like Stephen King is acceptable.
Audio Books available on Audible would be great.

2. Recs / icons / any kind of art / maybe even a drabble or a poem for the movie 'Conclave'

Thank you for reading :)

Promote a community!

This is my first post for the 'Community Thursday'. Today, I want to promote a community that already exists for ages, though there is very little participation.

[community profile] 100fandoms
This is a multifandom challenge community, where the idea is to get people to write stories in one hundred different fandoms. To inspire and frustrate you, you also get one hundred prompts to fill at the same time.

It may sound intimidating at first, but it is a low-pressure community. The only commitment is a maximum word count of 100. Everything else is up to you.

You can fill in the prompts in any language of your choice.
You can use older ficlets to fill in the prompts.
You can use works written for other communities.
There is no time limit.

I started my table in 2019 and then abandoned it. When reorganizing my journal at the beginning of this year, I stumbled over the old table. Now, it is back in my writing journal, and I hope to fill in some more prompts. If I will ever reach the end, who knows, but it is definitely a fun challenge.

Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.

Oh, that's a great challenge. Just give me a moment to sort out all the thoughts crossing my mind.

Being in fandom helped me overstepping my lines once. I am a very introverted, not very sociable 'girl' (okay, the girl I left behind a long time ago, but woman sounds so lame), but fandom helped me to open up against others. I chatted on various internet platforms, met people in real life, and finally visited my first convention.

It's about 20 years ago that my fandom life started, but I am still in contact with some online friends, even when our fandom interests began to differ. My best RL friend is Baumberta (her nickname is based on the German name for Treebeard); we meet now and then a year and go on vacation together once a year.

What has also improved over the years is
1. my English skills
I am from Germany, and I learned English at school. When joining Livejournal (my first English fandom forum = I was sooo nervous, and barely dared to post or comment. But people were nice, so I got more and more self-confident. I started to read fanfiction and comment on it. Finally, I began to write myself.

Today, I know my English was awful back then (Thank you to everyone who stayed around anyway) This is about 20 years ago now, and without even noticing it, my English improved with every fic I read and/or posted. Today, my English is (hopefully) better then before, but I am still learning more with every day.

2. my writing skills / my graphic skills
Similar to my English, when I started writing fanfiction and sometime later creating icons and other graphics, I was a complete newbie who barely knew what she was doing. And even if I've long accepted that I will never be a famous writer/artist, I still love doing it, and I hope to improve a bit more with every year.

Since this is the start of a new year, this challenge will be e to set your own goals! Of course, we can all make large or ambitious goals, but remember that small and/or short goals are also good!

Goals: Oh yes, I made some fannish goals. Many of them. Maybe too many?

Participating in [community profile] getyourwordsout = Habit 120 days of writing in 2025
Participating in [community profile] inkingitout = Write 75K of words in 2025
Participating in [community profile] 100fandomicons = Create 100 icons in 100 fandoms for 100 prompts

These are my primary goals. There are others, too.
- my bingo card for audible books
- my fannish bingo card
- complete the 'Fannish 50' Challenge = make 50 fannish-related posts over the year (I decided to go with mixed posts)

- keep my three challenge communities running (Two of them are low-pressure, and the third one is a competition community that asks for sign-ups. If you are curious and/or looking for some fannish challenges, check out my Hello and Welcome post)

- write more regularly again
- comment more

All of these sound very intimidating? Too much to stay on track with all the goals? Maybe. But I have decided that this is not the problem. Not for me. It will only get discouraging when I expect too much from myself.

Goals give me a reason to stay active during the year, but it is okay not to finish all of them!

I will be happy if I can finally make the call 'Challenge finished!' But there is no reason to be angry or disappointed when some of them are not completed at the end of the year. I tried! I have had fun trying! I have created more than I would have without this challenge. This is a lot, isn't it?

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

My fannish origin story ... hmm ... I am wondering when it starts. When I was a child, I could barely read, but I got my first 'Pucky' book at Christmas from my grandma? Some years later, when I discovered the books of Enid Blyton, devoured her 'Adventure' series first, until I moved on to the 'Mystery of...' and 'The Famous Five' series? It was then that I decided to be a great author like her one day, and I started writing my first fanfiction. Without even knowing that some like fanfiction was exciting ;)

Well, I guess, my true fannish life started years later when I discovered the movie 'The Fellowship of the Rings'. I knew nothing about Tolkien or that this movie was only the first of two more to follow. I just knew that I had fallen in love.

Everything else came almost on its own. I read the book(s) and started looking around on the internet for other people sharing my love. I discovered communities and even a (German) fan club for LotR. It was only a matter of time before I dared to widen my horizon even more and create my first Livejournal.

There, I found the first fanfiction stories I've ever read. I gathered all my courage to post one myself. And one more... and one more... Today, about 18 years later, I have seen some ups and downs; no, fandom is not the same anymore like it have been so many years ago, but I am still here, writing this post, and it feels good.
