Zeke paused in his work and stared at the glittering silver death's-head on the dark black hood. The contour were ready and he had started to fill them out. But his concentration died down with every minute.

He would only be too pleased to blame the damned pattern for it. He loved airbrushing, but he hated to go over the top. An airbrush could make a car unique ... or could ruin it. This was one of the worst motifes he had ever seen. But really ... it was not up to him to decide. If that's what the customer wanted, he would do his best to satisfy him. He always did.

Zeke took a deep breath. It was not about the airbrush, he knew it.

"Fuck, Debs! Could you please stop this?"

Debbee leaned against the wide door of the garage and scrutinized him.
"Oh, we are talking again? So you will stop ignoring me?"

"I don't ignore you!"

"Looks like it! Who is just up and away without any sign of life? You doesn't even answer your phone!"

Zeke glared at her. Everyone else would probably have backed off, but Debbee didn't.
"So what? You have found me anyway, right?

"Oh, it was not that hard to figure it out. But what the hell are you doing here, Zeke?"

He shrugged. Then he pointed at the car and the half-done airbrush.
"My job! That's what I'm paid for!"

Debbee rolled her eyes and smirked.
"Oh, c'mon, Zeke, stop acting like a stubborn dumbhead. Have a break. Bring your ass over here and talk to me!"

Zeke made a grimace but finally obeyed. He was not in the mood to talk to her. This was the reason why he hadn't at least called her back during the last two weeks. He knew what she would say. And he didn't want to hear it. He had made his decision. And nothing would change it.

The little office next door was crammed with shelves and old filing cabinets. Pictures of various oldtimer, Erik's greatest passion, covered the walls. A great, worn out plush couch in the corner. Only the PC on the desk was up to date, with the fastest internet connection one could have.

Zeke followed Debbee's look over to the little table in front of the window. On the table Oscar's cage - the little rat was looking back to her with his intelligent, bright eyes. Debbee smiled and put out her hand to rub his ears slightly.
"Hey, Oscar. At least you're glad to see me again!"

She ignored Zeke's dark glance when she sat down onto one of the old chairs and grabbed for a mug. Coffee was always ready in a great thermos jug. Zeke sighed inwardly. This was going to be a long afternoon. Finally he dropped down onto the couch and reached for a cigarette.

"So," he said defiantly.
"Let's get it over with! Talk!"

Debbee regarded him mindfully and Zeke knew she wouldn't waste any time.
"What's happened, Zeke? This is so not you! Just to run away and hide!"

"I don't hide! I'm just moving on. It was about time. You can't live in this hellhole of town, definitely not when you're gay!"

"You were always like this, Zeke, nothing has changed. Okay, it's out now, but you never give a damn about all the gossip about you. Don't you think, you are a bit overreacting? Your dad will stop fund you if he finds out that you drop out of school once again and ..."

Zeke shrugged.
"He already does. No fucking checks any longer. What a threat. I'm done with him, Debs. Done with all this shit. New life! And I need no one in it. No one!"

"Leaving school a few month before graduation is not really clever, you know?"

Zeke smirked. For the first time this afternoon he felt a bit more relaxed.
"Yeah, sure! You know what you're talking about, huh?"

Debbee smiled back.
"My grandpa was a wise man. He was right when he grabbed me by the neck and looped me back to school. It can't hurt to graduate, even if you don't want to go to college. But it leaves the doors open, just in case."

Zeke paused and bent forward to pour in a coffee for himself.
"No need to worry, Debs," he finally said.
"I will graduate next year. I'm gonna take evening classes. Three times the week. I've already talked about it with Eric, it's ok for him that I work just part time till graduation! Happy?"

The smile deepened.
"One-nil to you! Sounds good."
Then she got serious again.
"But there's more to it than this, isn't it?"

Zeke shrugged.
"Nothing to talk about. It's over!"

"I guess not! Do you know what all this is doing to Casey?"

Zeke stiffened. No! He would not talk about him. He would not start to think about him. Not now! Never again! It was over. Over. Over ...
"I don't give a damn," he said.
