In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy.

Hmm, let me think about this for a minute.

1. For any kind of background info of course I often use well-known places like Wikipedia and Google.

Mainly because I spent my whole life in Germany while my stories usually take place in the USA, I often need more info about daily stuff. What do people eat for breakfast? How do they celebrate Christmas? How is the school system built up? What kind of music was popular in 1970?

Depending on where my story takes place, I also google for pictures because it can help visualize places I have never visited.

But also for 'icon-making', Google can be helpful. It is not too difficult to find pictures when making icons for your favorite fandoms, but if you participate in a challenge where you have to do 100 icons from 100 different fandoms, it can get tricky. This is the moment when Google comes into play. For example: just google for science fiction movies, and you will get many results you have maybe never heard about before. But who says you have to know every movie you make icons from? Everything is fine as long as you find a perfect picture for a prompt.

2. I only discovered some time ago various sides that offer free stock photos. If you are interested in checking out the one or the other, I would suggest Snappa - here you will find 21 links to various photo sides.

The diversity of photos is immense on these sides. Sometimes I use a photo as a picture prompt for a story; sometimes, I use it as an icon's basis. It's totally up to you what you will make out of it.

3. Finally, there are many fandom resources you can find at Dreamwidth.

If you are looking for a year-long writing community, maybe you should risk a look at [community profile] getyourwordsout. You will have to pledge your personal yearly writing goal. There will be challenges, word wars, encouraging posts to get over your writing block, info for publishing your work, and more. Signing up for this year is still open until January 17.

If you are more interested in low-pressure writing challenges, you could join a drabble community, like [community profile] 100words or [community profile] anythingdrabble. Or maybe a multifandom community that is open to all kinds of fanwork is more appealing to you? Then come and visit us at [community profile] fffc. If all this is not enough challenge for you, have a look at [community profile] 100fandoms, where you will find a 100-prompt-table you will have to fill with 100 different fandoms.

Also for icon lover, there are some interesting communities like [community profile] 100fandomicons or [community profile] dailyicons.

In your own space, talk about an idea you wish you had the time / talent / energy to do.

I guess this one is easy to answer. Already when I was about 14/15 years old, I figured out what I wanted to do with my future. Writing! Not just for fun but as an author who would fascinate many people with her stories and maybe make enough money with it to make it a full-time job. Writing like my favorite author back then, Enid Blyton, whose books I devoured not only once but multiple times. I would have given a lot to write like her.

To make a long story short: yes, I did start playing around with words back then, not perfect but with love and passion. Until finally reality caught up with me, and I had to admit that a decent education was not the worst idea. For a while, I lost interest in writing and only came back to it years later, when I discovered the infinite vastness of fan fiction.

Since then, I am playing around with words again, lightyears away from talent and energy to make it a full-time job, and for sure, I am not Enid Blyton. But writing has already helped me through some rough times. Even if I will never publish a novel and never make money with it, that's totally okay because writing can be a hell of a lot of fun also when you are writing just for yourself.

In your own space, make a list of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, and/or that you'd like someone to create or do for you.

Because it always feels slightly strange to ask for a ficlet, some icons, or artwork for my tiny bits of writing, I have decided to take a different route this year.

Here are my wishes, short and sweet.

I would like to know what TV shows and/or movies you love most at Netflix, Disney, or Amazon Prime; old or new stuff, all genre (as long as it is not hardcore horror, sorry ;) ). Everything is welcome. Maybe there is something I have missed so far?

Anyone around who loves audiobooks? Any recommendation (available on Audible preferred)? I am open to every genre; audiobook, audio drama or podcast because, why not try something new?

:::

Things I wish would exist in Fandom? Well, it would be great if someone owns a time machine and turns back time about 15 years. Fandom back then was different and more familiar to me. But probably people who are new in fandom would say the same if they would be thrown back into the old times.

The fact is, that fandom has changed over the years, it's much more short-lived because of the variety of new fandoms the media offers nowadays. I can't even say, that this is a bad thing; I do enjoy the wide spectrum we have now. But sometimes it can get a tiny bit overwhelming, and then I think back to the old times and allow me to miss them. At least for a while. Nothing wrong with that, isn't it?

In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some famous canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea.

Great challenge; thank you so much for this idea.

Okay, where do I start? So many thoughts are crossing my mind right now.

Alternate Universe

Do I love it? Yes... and no. Depends on the fandom. While I can accept various kinds of AU stories for most fandoms, there are some which seem too deep to my heart that I would dare to 'fuck around with them.'

Yes
Most of the stories I write and read for my favorite fandom „The Faculty, “ are slightly AU. Because, c'mon, have you ever watched the movie? Casey and Deliah??? Who would want to read (and write) about this pairing?

My love belongs to 'my boys,' Casey Connor and Zeke Tyler, and even if they are not lovers in all of my stories, it is a given that they belong together. Most of the stories I write about them occur after the movie, but I rarely put the boys into a completely different setting.

That doesn't mean, though, that I don't love to read a good, totally AU story. I mean, who would not want to read about two young boys who are working in a gay whore house during the Great Depression? Or would you mind finding out more about the hard life on the roads after they both were turned into vampires?

No
Another fandom I love, maybe the fandom, which finally made me realize that something extraordinary like this exists, is 'Lord of the Rings.' A big fandom, with lots of communities, many artists, and fan fiction writers. One should expect that I did jump into the pool full of excitement.

But no. I made more than one try, but it never felt right for me. Don't get me wrong; I don't mind that others had/have tons of fun with writing and reading LotR fanfiction. There are many brilliant writers and (I am sure of that) lots of funny, touching stories. But for some reason, I can't stand the way, many stories bring Sam and Frodo together as lovers. It just feels wrong for me.

Of course, I know there is always the chance to write fanfiction that stays closer to canon. And yes, I did write little snippets now and then. But to be honest, it's not the same as if I write about 'my boys'. Deep inside, I always feel a tiny bit uncomfortable at the thought of playing around with the unique words of Tolkien.

Crossover/Fusion
Finally, let me say some words to crossover stories, which are, as I see it, nothing else than a special form of AU's.

Though I think crossover stories can offer a lot of fun, I only rarely write them. But there is one universe I created some time ago, which brings the events happening in 'The Faculty' together with my second fandom love 'Jeremiah.'

The alien incident happening in 'The Faculty' doesn't end well but causes the death of all adults (which happened in 'Jeremiah' because of a virus). Now Casey is, accompanied by Zeke, on a mission to save the future.

It is so much fun to bring the boys together with Jeremiah's most interesting characters. In this case, I am not writing a continuous story, though I try to follow a loose storyline with the main chapters. But there are also short snap-shots that just want to be written when an idea crosses my mind. And who am I to start a fight with my muse?

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year.

I have decided to go with fannish goals again. After re-reading my last year's goals, I have to admit that I was not very successful with most of them. At least I did finish my Icon Table for [community profile] 100fandomicons.

This brings me to my first goal for 2022. I did help out creating the new table and, of course, I hope that there will be 100 shiny, new icons at the end of the year.

When it comes to my writing goals, I decided to cut them down a bit. Writing is difficult at the moment (well, to be honest, for almost two years already). I miss it, and I want to go back into a regular habit, but there are lots of days where I struggle with every word and finally end with writing nothing. So I did sign up for the 180-days-in-a-year habit pledge at [community profile] getyourwordsout. And to keep the word count in mind, I will (unofficially) aim at 50K words.

What will I write? Well, first of all, I would like to work on various writing tables I've started in 2020/2021. At least the small ones should finally get finished; the bigger ones (both of them 100-prompt-tables for 100 different fandoms/different relationships) are tricky, and I will be happy at least to work on them again.

Besides that, I hope to do minor, low-pressure challenges for various writing- and maybe icon- communities.

:::

Audiobooks: I love audiobooks, but sometimes I am just too distracted to stay on track. But I guess it is worth trying to challenge myself a tiny bit by going back to the 'audiobook bingo' I did last year. It was fun, and it 'forced' me to try something new now and then. A new genre, a new author, a new narrator. Okay, the book can turn out to be a flop, but you can also discover an intriguing story.

:::

Finally, I am thinking about going back to a regular (weekly? monthly) post about my 'fannish life'. A list with all the TV shows and movies I did watch, the audiobooks I listened to, and, of course, the stuff I did create. I would love to do this more for myself because I think it might be fun to go back to these posts months, years later, and remember. But it also would add some activity to my quiet, quiet journal ;)

My opinion: 4/5 Points

This book fills the prompt: romance.
It's written by a German author (Emma Wagner); the narrator is Nadine Zaddam. It was the first time I did listen to a book by this author/narrator, but most likely not the last one.

The book is part of a series called: Irish Feelings, but the books are not connected. The story takes place in Irland. A young woman, Liz, is looking for some distraction after having a hard time at home. She goes to Ireland, where she plans to restore an old cottage for a friend.

But the start of her adventure is not the best: the airline lost her suitcase, the people of Greycastlehill don't like strangers, and the owner of the only pub acts like the most arrogant guy she had ever met...

You get it? This is not a book that will make your thoughts racing; it's only a simple love story where you can already guess the end from the beginning. But does this make it a boring book?

I think not. I have had a lot of fun listening to all the ups and downs the main persons of the story had to go through, until, in the end... well, you know ;) Yes, it's not, what I would like to listen to all the time, but it's great fun when all you want is some distraction from reality.

:::

My opinion: 3,5/5 Points

This book fills the prompt: longer than 12 hours
Original title: Carl Mørck 6, The hanging girl
It's written by Jussi Adler-Olsen, a Scandinavian author. The (german) narrator is Wolfram Koch. He reads all the books of the Carl Mørck Series, and I love to listen to his voice.

The novels of the Carl Mørck series tell thriller stories about the special department Q, which deals with old, long-forgotten cases of murder, rape, and kidnapping. Every book can be read as a stand-alone one because every case is solved at the end. But I would suggest starting with the first novel of the series and then follow along because there is also the development of the main characters you might not want to miss.

I love the books because the stories are always unique and full of interesting characters. But I will admit that it is not always easy to follow the storyline. There are lots of leaps in time, and the story is told from different perspectives. This is interesting but sometimes also a bit confusing.

Especially this book, The hanging girl, was not easy to follow. Or maybe it was just me, and I wasn't able to listen fully concentrated. More than once, I lost track and had to go back to re-listen a part of the story. What I did enjoy, though, was the thrilling finale, which was as good as ever.

Even though this was not the best book of the series, I know I will buy the part soon.
prisca: (general - audiobook)

My opinion: 5/5 Points

This book fills the prompt: crime.
The (german) narrator is Tanja Geke. She does a good job; I like her way of telling the story.

The book is part of a series by J.D.Robb (also known as Nora Roberts). The series takes place in the near future, but first of all, it's the story of Eve Dalles, an NYPSD-Leutnantin, and her husband Roarke (much too rich, much too smart, and much too good looking to be true ;) )

I like the mixture of 'soft crime' and the backstory of the characters. Not the kind of book you should take all too seriously, but it is fun to listen to.

Purity in Death is one of the best books of the series so far, I would dare to say. A fascinating plot about a computer virus that can kill people.

If you are interested in reading/listening to the book, I would advise starting with the first one of the series because there is a continuous character development you should not miss.

:::

My opinion: 2/5 Points

This book fills the prompt: Movie tie-in.
The (german) narrator is Robert Frank. I can't say I liked the way he did read the book. It was too slow, without many emotions, and I have to admit that I fall into sleep more just once (so, at least listening to the book was good for something)

Maybe you already heard about the movie Mortal Engines, which is based on the book. I admit I haven't watched it so far, and I don't think that I will, after listening to the book.

The book is the first one of a short series written by Philip Reeve. It takes place in a steampunk setting in the future, where the world we all know doesn't exist any longer.

You will already have noticed that I am not very enthusiastic about the book. Yes, there is an interesting plot. There could have been interesting characters, but they stay pallid most of the time, with only a tiny bit of backstory and character development. They are not dislikable but too boring to really feel with them. The story itself has its thrilling and emotional moments, but they are told much too rushed and sketchy to reach me in which way ever.

So, no, I will not listen to the other parts of the series because I'm not very interested in finding out how the main characters' lives will go on from now on. Other books are waiting for me, which hopefully will be more fun.

Challenge #12
In your own space, resurrect an old meme. Have fun with it! Which is the goofiest meme you can think of? Put on your party hat and be silly!!

I admit I don't do memes often. But I decided to do one [community profile] snowflake_challenge suggested me to try out.

Spell Your Name - pick a category: movies, books, TV shows, musicians, songs, etc. Spell your name with the first letter of each.

Category movies:

P - Papillon (The old one with Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen)
The movie tells the (true) story of convict Henri Charrière, nicknamed Papillon, who was imprisoned in 1933 in the notorious Devil's Island penal colony and finally managed to escape in 1941.

R - Return of the King (The third movie of the LotR Trilogy by Peter Jackson)
Aragorn makes a hot king, indeed, but I have to admit that my heart belongs to the hobbits, first of all, Samwise Gamgee. He might not be a king but for me, he is the hero of the whole story.

I - Invictus (Sports Drama by Clint Eastwood)
The movie is based on the book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation by John Carlin about the events in South Africa before and during the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

S - Sea of love (Thriller with Al Pacino)
The movie tells the story of a burned-out, alcohol-addicted detective who halfhearted tries to catch a serial killer, whose victims are lonely men looking for some fun. One of the suspects is a woman named Helen Cruger, but instead of being careful Keller oversteps the lines quickly and starts to date her.

C - Calendar Girls (British Comedy)
The movie is based on a true story of a group of middle-aged women who decides to produce a nude calendar to raise money for Leukaemia Research after the cancer death of the husband of one of their members.

A - Apollo 13 (Doku-Drama by Ron Howard)
The movie tells the true story of the astronauts Lovell, Swigert and Haise aboard Apollo 13 on their way to the Moon. Until an explosion deprives them of much of oxygen supply and electrical power. The moon landing is canceled, and the mission turns into a struggle to get the three men home safely.

Challenge #10
In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, creator, episode, or it could be your fandom friends. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to.

This is an interesting challenge, though I have to admit that I had to think about it for a while.

Dear Fandom,

I am so happy to have you in my life for so many years already. I guess my first contact with you was when I was about 10 years old. I didn't even know back then that something like 'Fandom' exists, but I can tell you that I already was addicted.

I was so in love with my favorite author Enid Blyton; I read all her books and loved her characters so much that I started to write my own little ficlets. Of course, without knowing anything about fanfiction.

When I got older, there were other authors and movies I did love. The first crush on an actor = I guess it was... hmmm... Robert Wager as Al Mundy? Tony Curtis and Roger Moore from the TV series The Persuaders.

But the first time I was ready to admit that I'm a fandom girl through and through came years later with Lord of the Rings. Actors I "fall in love with", internet platforms, fanfiction, conventions. People I met, online and in RL; people which I would never have gotten to know without fandom. You opened a new world for me.

So, I guess, it is time to say thank you to you. Fandom, with every kind of possibility you offer, gave me some of the best times of my life. And you still do; without you, I wouldn't sit here right now, writing this letter, thinking back to a lot of wonderful moments.

I hope we can stay friends forever.

Love,
Prisca

This one is a bit tricky. But to make a long story short:

1. I'm proud of reaching my [community profile] getyourwordsout Habit goal last year (120 days of writing; I did write about 170 days) though there were lots of months with almost no word written.

2. I am proud of finishing the 1oo Fandom Table for [community profile] 100fandomicons, especially because I am just a beginner when it comes to making icons. But it was so much fun, that I have already started with the 2021 table.

I will try not to be too boring.

1. Of course, I am always happy to find new stuff (fic, art, icons) for 'The Faculty' or 'Jeremiah (TV)', but I know, these fandoms are not of great interest anymore for most people.

What I would love, love, love to get are some animated icons = Casey&Zeke (Faculty) and Kurdy/Mr. Smith (Jeremiah)

:::

2. New fandom: The Queen's Gambit
3. New fandom: Tiny Little Things

Do you have created art for these TV series, or do you know someone who has written a story? Links would be great, thank you. I would also love to get some icons.

:::

4. Do you know any fanwork (fic, icon, art) about the opera The Magic Flute? Link, please, I need to check this out.

:::

5. Feedback
I'm not asking for feedback for my own stories and icons (though, of course, I love to get some ;) ) It's more a reminder, also to myself, to leave a (short) comment whenever you come across a fic or an artwork you love. It only takes a minute, and it can mean so much to the creator.

I had to think about this for a while; some challenges crossed my mind, but they were not very new and not very exciting. More like the stuff I already do for years.

Not that there is anything wrong with it. But I wanted to try something I had never done before.

Finally, I got it! Maybe you've already seen people doing a yearly book bingo challenge. All you have to do is to read books for given prompts.

I've decided to do a similar challenge for audiobooks this year. Because I love to listen to audiobooks but use to do it much too rarely. I've thought about 30 prompts and created (randomly, by a bingo generator) this card - only a small one for the beginning.

Challenge #5
In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love.

This year I have decided on

Lord of the Rings
I remember that I tried to read the books when I was about 16/17 years old... and I failed miserably.

Some years later, Peter Jackson's movies resounded to the lands, and it was impossible to escape them. I watched a trailer more accidentally (Gandalf and the Balrog at Khazad-dûm), and I knew I had to watch the movie.

I was intrigued from the very first moment. The Shire, the music, the Hobbits. Sam. I admit, I like Frodo, but my heart always belonged to Sam. The way Peter Jackson brought Middle-earth to life. It was the beginning of a great journey.

I finally read the books - and nowadays, I am glad I watched the movies first because I could enjoy them without thinking about the changes PJ made. It doesn't mean that I don't have learned to love the books, too; some parts are better than the movies. Sam in the ork-tower, god, it always breaks my heart to read these chapters.

I started to visit internet forums; usually, I am a shy person who doesn't like to interact with strangers, but suddenly it was easy to overstep my lines because we all shared one big love. I started to visit small gatherings with fans at first, later my first Ring Con in Bonn. I made new friends; I met some of the actors; I even got the chance for a photo with Sean Astin (which I hate, because I look like a dork, but I would never ever want to miss the memory **grins**).

All this is about twenty years ago, and even if the fandom faded away over the years, Lord of the Rings is still a part of my life. I re-watch the movies, I listen to the music, I re-read the book. And for now, I am curious where the journey will go when the new Amazon series come out.

Challenge #4
In your own space, create some goals.

Writing goals:
I've signed up to [community profile] inkingitout (75K) and[community profile] getyourwordsout (240 days) again and hope to finish both goals this year. But we will see where the roads will take me.

To reach these goals, I should write at least 5 days a week, with an average of 205 words a day (when I'm writing every day). This means that I finally need to find back to a more or less regular writing habit. I hope to continue as I've started, but so much can happen and throw me off the track.

But that's okay. More important is never to forget that writing should be fun, not stressful. Because of that, I will mostly stay at drabbles and short flash ficlets, though I am still thinking about it finally to write a longer AU SF fic, which is in my mind for so long already. Who knows, maybe 2021 is the year to start with it?

Community goals:
I'll make a fresh start with my own writing communities (I already did with Write short and sweet (better known as [community profile] one_sentence_only). [community profile] picture_prompt_fun will follow soon. The interest is not great, which I can totally understand; there are so many writing challenges and communities out there and it's impossible to be active in all of them. But I still refuse to give them up. In the worst case, at least I will have fun with my own prompts = more words for my writing goals. ;)

Icon goals:
I did sign up again at [community profile] 100fandomicons, and I hope to finish the table again. Making icons is a nice change from writing, even if I'm far from being perfect.

Challenge #3: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why? This could be a creator, an actor, a costumer, a set designer, a director, a character, a composer, anybody! What would you talk about? What are you dying to know?

Hmmm. Sean Astin came into my mind at first, then Viggo Mortensen or maybe Tom Ellis?

But then ... boom ... the answer is so easy. Elijah Wood and Josh Hartnett. Josh, because I think, he's hot, and Elijah because of his amazing blue eyes. Besides that, both of them are really interesting characters and have done some not so popular, but even more interesting movies. Would be fun to chat with them about their work and their future plans.

Speaking of future plans: I would try all to convince them, that a sequel to "The Faculty" is long overdue. After all the years Casey and Zeke are meeting again in Herrington. They have to fight another alien invasion, or, to keep up with the times, maybe there are zombies overrunning the town?

Whatever, of course, at the end of the movie they will save the world once again. And, most important, they are finally ready to admit that they had never stopped thinking of each other. Casey will leave Delilah behind and finally they are living happily together until the end of time. And everything is like it should be!

**Grins** Would be fun to find out what Josh and Elijah are thinking about this idea, don't you think so?
