We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day. (Edith Lovejoy Pierce)

I want to wish a Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates and a wonderful day to everyone else. This year is difficult for all of us and also Christmas time is different from any other year before. But maybe we should try to let loose and enjoy some peaceful hours, alone, or with only close family around, remembering the small things we still have. Music, books, movies, sun rays playing on the snow, or your favorite Christmas meal. Whatever helps to make you feel better, just enjoy it.

Let us keep Christmas,
holding it close to our hearts
for its meaning never ends
and its spirit is the warmth and joy
of remembering friends.

Love you all

Though at first, I was sure that I wouldn't do this one, I couldn't resist at the end.

Challenge: Your favorite characters collect shirts. For this challenge, you'll be creating a digital t-shirt quilt for a favorite character.

I guess, for most of my friends the result will not be a big surprise. For everyone else: I made a quilt for Casey Connor, one of the main characters of The Faculty

The challenge was to find some imagines/screencaps or make various graphics for given prompts. (The words "screencap," "image," etc. were all interchangeable)

Here is my result )

Because writing is still slow (again, sigh, what kind of strange times we are living into) I've decided to have some fun and make a fanmix for [community profile] monthlysupergo. It's for the TV show Lucifer

And another graphic challenge for [community profile] lands_of_magic. I admit, at first, I was slightly disappointed because there are only a few writing challenges, but I start to love these graphic challenges. It's something I've done only rarely before, but it is addicting :)

As ever, click on the images for original size.

Another challenge at [community profile] lands_of_magic. Fashion show.

Create some outfits for your favorite characters by using this site. First I thought that I might skip this challenge because I had no idea where to start. But finally, I came up with four outfits for prom night. Of course, for my favorite fandom: The Faculty

I'm back home from the baltic sea since Saturday already, but I needed some time to settle in again.

It was a nice trip; even the weather decided to play along. Not much sun, but no rain either, not too cold for some walks along the sea, which I did enjoy so much.

I also visited the hotel's pool every day; one day, I went to the bigger water park because I was curious. They did build up a new kid's area, which my grandchildren will hopefully enjoy when we go there in May. I prefer the pool with artificial waves, though ;).

Best of the trip was that a good friend of mine joined me for two days; we could clink glasses at midnight and celebrate my birthday a bit, and of course, we did chat a lot. It was so great to meet her again; even better that she enjoyed the trip so much that she told me that we want to do this again at least next year around my birthday :)

(Sorry for no pictures, I admit I was much too distracted to take some. Hope to do better in May, when I go back there together with my sons, my daughter in law and my two grandchildren)

Challenge #15
In your own space, create your own challenge.

I would love to offer you two challenges - one RL related and the other one fandom related.

1. Real Life
We all are struggling with our goals and plans now and then. I challenge you (and myself, I use to forget this all too easily, and the chance that I will give up is big) to be nice to yourself and not to force you too much. Even a small success is a success.

My challenges for this year:
Losing weight: Remember, that you don't have to lose 10+lb within one week; this may look great in TV shows, but it is much more realistic to make mini-steps. Just go your way. Don't be mad at you if you fail now and then. Be proud of even the smallest loss of weight.

Sport: If the only sport you did so far was watching Football or Tennis on TV, don't expect that you will turn into a sports ass overnight. Take it slow. A ten-minute-walk once a week is a beginning; you can think about running a marathon next year when your condition has improved.

2. Fandom Life
I already did mention it before. There are so many great fandom-related communities out there. Sadly a lot of them are very quiet or even abandoned.

I want to challenge you to pick one or two of these communities you are interested in (or you loved once but have left them behind because there are so many new, interesting communities you want to try out).

Give them a (new) chance. Complete a table you have started ages ago but never finished. Grab a new table. Participate in a challenge. Leave some new prompts. Or, if getting active seems to be too much for you at the moment, read some older stuff; leave a short comment. Readers are as important for a community as writers.

Just help to keep a community alive.

Challenge #14
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) What makes it particularly appealing for you? What do you like in fanworks featuring that trope?

I guess all of you who know the one or the other story of mine will have already noticed the obvious. I am hopelessly romantic, and I love, love, love a happy end. Which doesn't mean that I don't enjoy some H/C or angst now and then.

I like to write fix-it stories, especially when a movie or series strikes a path I just can't stand. Remember: happy end; I hate it when my favorite pairing decides to go separate ways or if the oh so cute guy dies much too early. So good to know that in fanfiction, we can fix everything.

I do enjoy well-written sex scenes, including (moderated) kinky variants and BDSM, as long as everything happens in mutual agreement. But I also don't mind if an author decides to leave most to the phantasy of the readers what might go on between two (or more) people. Awkwardly written sex scenes can ruin every story.

Challenge 13
In your own space, create a fanwork.

Well, maybe this is a tiny bit of cheating because I didn't do these for Snowflake only. But I did some fannish stuff during the last two days.

1. I looked for interesting poem-prompts and posted them at [community profile] 31days = February Writing Prompts

2. I did finish a new writing table for [community profile] one_sentence_only (not posted yet)

3. Fanwork, yeah :) I did write and post a double-drabble for [community profile] drabble_zone = The only real friend

Challenge #11
Fandom is full of awesomely helpful references and resources! What are some of your favorites?
Tutorials? Fandom Primers? Ship Manifestos? Info Posts? How-to Guides? Writing Resources? Helpful Links?
In your own space, recommend a fannish or creative resource.

There are various recourses which help me with writing.

First of all, because English is not my native language Grammarly, a free writing assistant app (there is also a paid version if you want more help) for spell and grammar check. And Leo, not only a dictionary for various languages but also a great forum to get help, a vocabulary training program, language courses and more.

Of course the usual places like Google and Wikipedia. To find more back info for movies and series I often go to IMDB.

I do like to visit photo/picture sites like Pexels or Unsplash. The material at these sites are free to use, so you can also use them to create banner or icons.

Helpful for writing are, of course, also writing communities, which offer challenges and prompts to keep the words flowing, or which encourage you not to give up only because you are fighting with a serious writing blockade. If you are looking for some communities like this at Dreamwidth, I would recommend having a look at Snowflake, day 3 - Pimp Your Favorite Communities, Fests or Challenges!

Talk About A Creator/Someone Who Inspired You.

Ohhh, I do love today's challenge. I want to talk about people who lead me to fandom and who inspired me enough to stay there.

First of all, Sean Astin. Of course, I don't know him (well, I've met him once at a convention, but I guess this doesn't count), but without him, I would probably never have made the way into fandom. The first movie I watched with him in a leading role was Lord of the Rings. And his performance of Sam was so great that I wanted to watch more movies with Sean. Okay, I will admit, there are a lot of cheap B-movies, I don't like, but also some very great performances. Like Mr. Smith from Jeremiah. Rudy from Touchdown. Harrison Bergeron. Old, unknown movies and I started to wonder if anyone else besides me had ever heard about them ;) So I ended up surfing through the net and it was unavoidable that I finally discovered fanfiction.

I guess most of you will have already noticed it, that English is not my native language. I was pretty unsure at first if I would be able to make friends at Livejournal. But it was pretty easy; 'with the help of Sean' I soon found a group of people who shared my interests. And who did write the most interesting fanfiction.

First of all [livejournal.com profile] honeyandvingar. She used to write the most wonderful 'The Faculty' stories, and I learned to love this fandom before I even watched the movie. At least since that moment, I am hopelessly addicted to fandom and fanfiction. Honey, you will always be the queen of The Faculty for me.

Sometime later, I dared to write my first Jeremiah ficlets, written in horrible English, as I know today. Nevertheless, I got nice, encouraging comments, and it felt sooo great to be a part of a community that loved the same stuff as I did. I would like to say thank you to everyone who was there for me back then (and who is still around). Sadly not so many anymore; a lot of people did move on to other interests or left their journals behind. But that's a different story.

Another one I need to mention here is Mews. Sadly she passed away about two years ago, but I am so thankful that I have met her (even if only online). She was one of the most kind, encouraging people I have ever met. A brilliant writer, too; I am glad that I have saved all her stories at my PC so that I can re-read them when I want.

She was the one who let me dare it to write my very first The Faculty story. Short backstory: One time, she posted about a group named 'Celtic Thunder,' and because I was curious, I followed her links. And I fall in love with the group and their music (today I own almost every CD they have ever published, and even after about ten years I'm still listening to them).

As a 'thank you,' I decided to write a little something for her. And because the Jeremiah Fandom doesn't seem to fit, I finally choose The Faculty. This was the result: Like a bird without wings, based on a song of Celtic Thunder. Now, after re-reading it, I am sitting here, with tears in my eyes (and the song in my head); this was the beginning of an exhilarating trip that still lasts, and I know without Mews (and all the other wonderful people around) I would probably never have made this step.

In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom).

Well, it's obvious that I can't promote 'The Faculty' here, because all I write is actually AU = a relationship between Casey and Zeke never happened in the movie itself. (Someone should make a sequel to correct this ;) )

So I decided to go for two fandoms.
1. Jeremiah (TV)
I started to watch this show with season two only because of Sean Astin, who plays Mr. Smith. A very mysterious guy who insists on being God's messenger. It's obvious that I still love him, but I also like the plot of the show (there is a main story, especially in the second season, but also stand-alone episodes), so that I re-watch the show now and then, starting with season one.

The story takes place in a dystopian world. A virus killed all adults about 15 years ago, leaving the children behind. One group of them (grown up in the meantime) is living in a former military base called Thunder Mountain. The leader is not only looking for a way to keep 'his people' save; he also thinks about the future of the world and tries his best to build a new society. Which is not always easy, of course, because there are other groups, too, with different interests. And there is still the question: Will the virus come back one day? And what can we do against it?

Unfortunately, the show was not as successful as hoped. Sometimes I think it just wasn't the right time for it. Today we have 'The Walking dead' or '100' and other stuff like this. And Jeremiah would have had the same potential. But it got canceled after only two seasons. A lot of questions are not answered, and you may say that the show ends with a cliffhanger. Though for me, it is a least a good one, and I can live with it.

2. The Good Doctor (TV)
This is a pretty new series from 2017; in the meantime, there are three seasons. You may say: Oh no, not another medical drama, we already have enough of this. But 'The good doctor' is different.

Of course, there are stories taking place at a hospital in San Jose. There are cute doctors, a tiny bit of sex, and lots of drama. But first of all, there is Shaun Murphey, the leading role of the show.

Shaun is young, Shaun is a brilliant surgeon. And he is an autist. With a lot of problems to interact with others, brutally honest also to the patients. A great part of the show turns around him; not only his way as a doctor but also his complicated past and his try 'to survive' everyday life.

I admit it, I do like medical drama, and I've already watched some shows, but 'The Good Doctor' is different, maybe even better than everything I have watched before.

Promote/Rec/Sing the Praises of Yourself!

Hm.

- There was not much writing during the last year I can be proud of; too little words, too many missed challenges. But in December I regained my writing mood. Since then, I am writing regularly again, with a tolerable rate of missed days, which feels pretty good.

- I've finally started an archive for all my writings [community profile] p_r_i_s_c_a, and I plan to copy older works there little by little.

- I guess most of the people who will read this will know that I usually write fanfiction and have two main fandoms from the beginning (The Faculty / Jeremiah). While I usually give my boys (The Faculty) a happy end, I don't hesitate to let Mr. Smith (Jeremiah) suffer a bit, but always with a touch of hope, that one day even for him things might be better again.

It is always difficult for me to leave my comfort zone behind and try something new. So I am proud when I manage it to write a poem. Or fill a kink table for a community. Or write in a new fandom.

Comfort = a poem (original)
Kink/Smut = a table for [community profile] one_sentence_only
Shattered hope = The good doctor (brandnew fandom)
prisca: (general - terrible life)

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

Maybe you want more people to talk about a certain fandom with, or you'd love to trade ficlets with somebody over email. Maybe you're new to a fandom and would like some recs to start reading, or communities to join. This is the time to ask

Well, this is the challenge I hate most ;) First, because my biggest wishes are mostly the same. Second, because I know most of them are only pipedreams.

Of course, I would love to read more about my favorite fandoms The Faculty and Jeremiah (TV). A small but active community and more fan fiction would be great. But I am realistic; there are not many people interested in such old stuff anymore. Sometimes I feel like an alien, stranded on earth. ;)

Another secret wish of mine: more active members for my writing communities. [community profile] picture_prompt_fun and [community profile] one_sentence_only. I try to keep them alive, but sometimes it gets frustrating. But again: I know, both comms are probably not of great interest to a lot of writers because they are particular. There are other (much longer existing) writing comms that offer more interesting challenges. And it is impossible to be active everywhere.

Art & Icons:
Every kind of art for my main fandoms is always welcome. Casey & Zeke together (The Faculty); Mr. Smith and Kurdy Malloy (Jeremiah).
Some icons for 'The Good Doctor' (TV series), 'Good Omens,' 'Starwars' (The rise of Skywalker - Kylo Ren/Rey or maybe, back to the beginnings, Yoda) and 'The Mandalorian (Baby Yoda!!!)
